Day 5 Ketchikan
The first port city was great! The weather was cold and it rained a bit but
people in the way and
you can get the city and the mountains in the background. I missed this shot becase I took too many close ups but as you see from the other photos I have, that the mountains in the background which adds a little something extra to the picture. Looking down on the city is a great vantage point for
pictures, but if you miss the sign from the ship you can still take it from road. We did an early excursion, not with the cruiseline, but overall it was pretty good. Our tour was not quite what I expected. My main goal for this port was to get to the Saxman Native Village to get a few of the pressed pennies in the penny machines. I enjoy collecting them and I collected them whenever they were available on this trip. My parents decided to humor me and since we were budgeting our money for our cruisetour and for other excursions such as whale watching we took a budget tour to the village. We were too early for the salmon run but our guide was of Tlingit descent and was a special education teacher in town. He had some really good stories of Tlingit folklore and and amazing amount of interesting information. We saw several eagles. I saw an
otter that a young eagle swooped down upon and tried to grab, scaring it into the water. I got one photo before this happened and felt very privileged to get a glimpse of the playful otter, one of my favorite animals. That sort of made my day. It was really funny to see the young eagle's reaction when it realized
how big the otter was.

The Saxman Native Village
This is the place the tour took us to see the wildlife

The village was really cool and I really enjoyed the stories behind the wonderful works of art. Our guide was able to share the stories behind the totem poles. The tour was a great starting point for our visit to Alaska as we learned more about native culture. I looked at the village and all the totem poles and then went to the gift shop where I purchased a sterling wolf necklace that I get many compliments on whenever I wear it. I also got the pressed pennies from the penny machine. After Saxman village, we were taken back to town where we ate fried fish at Pirates. It was a good meal with lots of food. We also enjoyed the gift shop next door. We shopped and found a few more penny machines. We enjoyed the shops at Creek Street, got a few souvenirs in town, and headed back to the ship after a long and eventful day.
