Yellowstone: the Final Days, Going Home.

The Yellowstone trip was drawing to a close. We saw as much as we could, probably more that anyone should try to see in the short amount of time we were there, but there is still so much more to see. We will definitely be making a return trip someday. Everyone should make it to Yellowstone at least once in their lifetime. For the last two days we stayed close to our cabin hotel and drove around the nearby places just enjoying our last moments in Yellowstone. We were so tired at this point that the last day we decided to stay at the hotel. I took a horse riding excursion offered through the hotel. It was interesting. Other people got horses with names like Bailey, Crystal, and Maveric. Being a more experienced rider, I got Asphault and he was a little strong headed to say the least. But the ride was gorgeous and a very good way to end our time in Yellowstone.

Here are some pictures of the amazing thermal features of Yellowstone. Many of the photos on this blog can be orderered by simply clicking on the link below the photo.

These our some of the photos that I had not yet posted so they are a little bit of everything. For all of you who came along for the ride as I re-lived my Yellowstone trip, I hope you enjoyed it and found something helpful in it. Thanks for reading.

The Yellowstone trip ended with this rainbow welcoming us back home. What a way to end such a great trip. Thanks for reading.

Yellowstone Day 6: The Grand Tetons and the Moose

Woke up and drove down the mountain into The Grand Tetons to get some clear photos of the mountains before the afternoon fog rolled in. After stopping at some good spots and obtaining some satisfactory photos we headed to the Teton Village for lunch. We took Moose Road and as chance had it we saw a moose. It was feeding in pond close to the road. Got some really great photos with the water dripping from its mouth and the sun gleaming off a droplet on its eyelash. It was great to see her and after observing from a safe distance for a time we continued on. Ended up eating at The Mange Moose Restaurant. Somehow moose remainded a constant theme for the rest of the day, and no the restraurant was not planned, it just worked out. Oh, the irony. Once lunch was through we returned the way we came, saw some cars pulled over so we assumed the moose was still there. The moose was still there however it had a baby and unkown to me I was walking right towards it.

Thankfully, the people we saw earlier told us about the calf. They said we could see the calf in a clearing further down the road so as we were walking towards it I came face to face with a not too happy Momma. I could only see her face because she was in a bush right by the road; however, I got a much closer than desired view of those eyes. She was only about 5 feet away, way too close for comfort. This was not a good situation. Moose are aggressive and a momma moose is the worst. So we forgot about seeing the calf and hightailed it out of there.

We warned the other people about the momma and they were looking for her and trying to take a pictures when we left. Having done our stupid tourist thing for the trip we headed to the visitor center before heading back to the hotel.

Yellowstone Day 5 Elk, Wolves, and Bears Oh My!

The day started out very early as we gathered our belongings and headed out of the park to Montana. The sun was not yet up but as we drove on in the beams of the headlights something gleamed- an elk stood just off the road shaded in trees. Once we reached our destination we were too early. Nothing was open and it was still dark. We drove around waiting for a breakfast place to open. We ended up at some bear place. I had a stuffed muffin thing that was interesting but don't think I would try it again.
After breakfast and lots of coffee we headed to the Wolf and Grizzly Discovery Center. It is a great sanctuary. The exhibits are the best I have seen for wolves yet and they actively display normal behavior. I don't thing I saw any pacing which is amazing in a captive environment. The Discovery Center is the reason we went to Montana. After taking a lot of pictures and watching the wolves catch salmon we shopped around town for souvenirs.
If you care about the animals be careful from where you buy. Don't support places that have fur and skins and the like. Think before you spend and be conscious of what you are contributing to. A great day already, but but we were far from done. We drove back through Yellowstone to get to our next hotel taking senic routes in hopes of seeing wildlife. It paid off. The first thing we saw was a lone elk grazing in the distance too far for a great photo opt but I took a few that you can see below. We continued onward and found a small herd of female elk and they
had a fawn. It was awsome. We pulled off where we were allowed then waited to see if the fawn would stand up for a better picture. While we were waiting a ranger came by and we talked some. He told us about the elk and that the fawn was a couple of months old and that it was common to see related females from theses small herds at this time of year. I talked with him about some interesting tourists we had seen so far, in particular the thermal people, and he found it amusing and gave me a pin that I now have attached to my camera case and it is still one of my favorite souvenirs.

The fawn got up for about two seconds and I did get some photos. After that we kept driving and when we are almost there and we hit construction. And get this, we had a pilot truck to follow. That's a first for me. We drove up the mountain through some slightly less then comfortable roads (as in my mom was a little freaked out) and we finally make it to the hotel. We checked in and headed to our cabin and we were done for the day.
